The Rwanda Civil Aviation Training and Innovation Center (RCATIC), established by the Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority (RCAA), has commissioned an air traffic control (ATC) simulator at its Kigali International Airport facility, in partnership with Airways International.
The simulator strengthens national capacity to deliver practical, competency-based ATC training to aviation professionals in Rwanda and across Africa, in support of safe and modern air traffic services.
The system, based on Airways International’s TotalControl solution, comprises a 360-degree Aerodrome Control simulator with three controller working positions, three Approach and Area Control simulators, and eight simulator pilot positions. It reproduces real-world operational conditions, enabling trainees to develop and demonstrate competence in a controlled environment that closely reflects live operations.
A simulator commissioning ceremony was recently held at the RCATIC facility, with the commissioning coming at a time of rapid growth in aviation in Rwanda and across Africa. The simulator will enable RCATIC to prepare air traffic controllers for the operational challenges of the future through rating training in Aerodrome, Approach and Area Control, including procedural and surveillance training, as well as refresher, on-the-job training instructor, supervisor and assessor courses.
“This simulator allows RCATIC to provide air traffic controllers with practical, scenario-based training that can replicate any airport, here in Kigali, preparing competent and confident controllers for Rwanda and for the continent,” says Albert Aidoo Taylor, Director of RCATIC.
“RCATIC’s investment in advanced simulation reflects a strong commitment to safe, modern and future-focused air traffic services. We’re proud to support RCATIC with advanced simulation technology that strengthens training outcomes today, and we look forward to continuing this journey and supporting RCATIC’s vision for aviation training in Africa,” says James Evans, General Manager Commercial at Airways International.
