Meet Shem Love – Simulator Team Leader at Airways International, based in our Christchurch offices. In this Q&A with Shem, he shares a little about himself, and about working for Airways International and in the aviation industry.
What do you like most about working at Airways International?
It is a wonderful team environment with lots of interaction across the various departments, and lots of opportunity to grow into new and challenging roles! I love frequently bumping into familiar faces in the carpark and having a yarn.
What initially attracted you to this role, and organisation?
Having recently completed my diploma in aviation, I had used many resources produced by Airways and had always been impressed by the quality of service provided. The Simulator team stood out to me as it gave me an opportunity to use some of the skills I had learned, but in a different way and with a different focus than I had previously done.
What advice would you give someone wanting to start their career in the aviation industry?
The old saying “It’s not what you know, but who you know” absolutely applies to the aviation industry. Most of the opportunities I’ve had have come because of the connections I’ve made with different people along the way. Skills are important, but relationships will build the bridges to your dreams and career goals!
What moment or achievement are you most proud of?
Being promoted to team leader. When I first started as a sim pilot, I was so overwhelmed by the complexity of the system that I never thought I would progress beyond piloting. It didn’t take too long, with the support of my leaders and colleagues, that I started to grasp the system and after a couple of steps up the ladder, ended up as team leader. I am very honored to lead a fantastic group of people who pride themselves in making the Sim a great asset to the company.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Towing gliders and instructing new pilots fulfils my craving to be in the air. On the weekend my young family and I can often be found down at the local coffee cart by the beach or walking or biking around the hills. I also enjoy volunteering at my local church where my wife and I help write and produce music.
