Staff Spotlight: Mark Cruz

Meet Mark Cruz โ€“Navigation Procedure Designer, based at Airways Internationalโ€™s Aeropath office in Wellington, New Zealand. In this Q&A with Mark, he shares a little about himself, and about working for Airways International and in the aviation industry.

What do you like most about working at Airways International?

The team! Iโ€™m blessed to work with these modest but brilliant professionals, the work culture, the company, and especially the work that I enjoy doing.

What initially attracted you to this role, and organisation?

Iโ€™ve always been interested in the aviation industry, looking up to my father as my hero who worked as an Air Traffic Controller and later a Flight Dispatcher until he retired.

It was fascinating for me, so I decided to take the same path. Before becoming a procedure designer, I donned different hats as an aircraft mechanic, ramp operations crew/officer, flight dispatcher, and ATC.

It also paved the way for me to meet and connect with exceptional people from different countries, organizations, and roles in the industry who share the same love and passion for aviation and its ever-changing technology.

What advice would you give someone wanting to start their career in the aviation industry?

Focus on whatever youโ€™re doing now. No matter how small or insignificant it may seem it will always be a crucial part of a bigger picture. Donโ€™t lose sight of whatever goal or aviation role you want to play – work to achieve it and always give it your best. And when you get it, understand that the scope of aviation is broad and any skills, experience or innate talent you have will come in very handy.

What moment or achievement are you most proud of?

Moving to New Zealand and working for Aeropath – AIL. Seeing my kids grow up to be responsible adults.ย

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Spending time with my family. It doesn’t really matter what the activities are โ€“ it could be doing house chores together or hanging out at the beach, lounging after playing our favourite sport, travelling locally or abroad, or just simply window shopping at the mall or trying out different restaurants.
