Procedure design training: General Criteria and Conventional Procedures

This is the foundational course in our procedure design training pathway, based on ICAO Doc 8168 Volume II (PANS-OPS). It introduces participants to the essential principles of instrument flight procedure design, including obstacle clearance requirements and the construction of safe, regular flight paths.

Covering topics such as ground-based navigation aids, approach classifications, holding and circling procedures, and departure and en-route segments, this module provides a comprehensive overview of conventional design criteria. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to construct and evaluate conventional procedures with a clear understanding of safety margins, charting requirements, and ICAO methodology.

This course is ideal for professionals involved in flight procedure design, airspace planning, aviation safety oversight, and regulatory compliance. Typical attendees include procedure designers, flight operations officers, air navigation service providers, and civil aviation authority personnel. Whether you’re new to PANS-OPS or looking to formalise your expertise, this module equips you with the knowledge and practical skills to interpret and apply ICAO standards confidently.
