The aim of this course is to refresh participants with instructional techniques and tools to manage and motivate a trainee’s performance using a competency framework, positive reinforcement and continuous assessment, for effective and timely diagnosis of skill deficiencies and application of skill enhancement strategies.

Participants will refresh their toolbox of knowledge, skills and aide memories to assist them in their ATC Instructor role.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, the participant will:

• Understand how to encourage motivation
• Identify diminishing motivation and understand why this should be avoided
• Know how to recognise and manage learning/performance plateaus
• Feel confident completing a briefing checklist
• Know the key elements required to conduct, and the importance of, an effective brief
• Know the key elements required when carrying out on the job training
• Understand different handover techniques after an intervention
• Understand different recovery techniques to re-establish the training relationship
• Know how to conduct an effective debrief
• Be able to provide frequent meaningful feedback
• Know how to intervene and the different techniques to optimise best practice
• Be able to describe and apply the Dreyfus model as it pertains to an OJTI
• Be able to read-back and hear-back in relation to the Dreyfus model.

Trainees must be proficient in reading, writing and speaking English, and have the following:

• Current ATS Instructor rating
• Current air traffic licence with a rating for the relevant service
• At least three years’ experience exercising the privileges of an instructor rating.
